Two buildings in particular fascinated me. One was on North Spring, and had been built from brick and wood in 1905. It had a cellar, very rare in Los Angeles, that probably served some nefarious use when it was built. The building had been deserted for about 20 years, since it had, by local lore, been the original home for the Sriracha factory.
The landlord was famously crazy. He owned the whole block and was not really interested in leasing any of it. He liked wine and we had some fascinating meetings. I was really in love with the building because of the cellar, and the beautiful gated yard facing North Spring— and the fact that it was one of the oldest standing buildings in the city. But it did not seem possible…
